Brian Carter 1934 - 2023

general

We are very sorry to hear of the passing of Brian Carter aged 88 on the 23rd June at the Royal Worcester Hospital.

Brian’s son Ian Carter wrote the following:

My father dedicated an enormous amount of energy, and indeed his life, to the sport. Having been Marketing Manager for IMI/ Eley Ammunition based in Birmingham,  for several years in the 1970s he later started his own company, Mediterranean Shooting Supplies in Evesham, in the early 1980s as the sole importer of Maionchi cartridges also importing other shooting equipment and shotguns. He was a regular exhibitor at CLA Game Fairs.

Despite his stroke in the late 1990s my father went on to Chair the CPSA for several years and was Great Britain Shooting Team Manager. Latterly he was Director of the Gun Trade Association for many years.

One area he put enormous energy into and acted as a great ambassador to the sport was the role he undertook on the Home Office Firearms Consultative Committee which met over a number of years in the wake of the terrible events involving Michael Ryan in Hungerford having influence over the subsequent Firearms Amendment Act. I feel sure that committee was able to help ensure subsequent changes in legislation were more proportionate and less impactive on participants of the sport than they might have been.

After many years of dedication to the sport my father was awarded the freedom of the city of London for his achievements in the Gun Trade and joined the Worshipful Company of Gunmakers. I recall attending a Nomination Dinner with him as his guest held at Butchers Hall in November 2002.

He maintained a large circle of friends he made both in the Gun Trade and from his associated activities, some of them used to travel to Ireland or Scotland each year to enjoy salmon fishing.

He leaves behind his wife Margaret, three children Jane, Sarah & myself and five grandchildren. He will be dearly missed.
