English Open Sporting Day 1

championships

Warm sunshine and a clear sky welcomed the shooters on Day One of the CPSA English Open English Sporting at High Lodge

As the first Major Sporting Championship of the 2022 season and without Covid-19 restrictions in place, the competition was in high demand with the event becoming full within days of the bookings opening at the end of January.

The hosts, High Lodge Leisure are very accomplished at holding our championships with the British Open Sporting & Sportrap held there in 2019. Co-course setters John Bidwell & Andy Coppen have fully utilised the ground with the course starting on the Sportrap layouts before disappearing into the woods and then finally re-appearing on the former golf course near to the Clubhouse and comprises 15-stands consisting of 120 targets. As we've come to expect from John & Andy, they have created a technical course with plenty to challenge shooters of all abilities.

CPSA CEO Iain Parker said “We are very pleased to have partnered with High lodge once again for our first CPSA Sporting Championship of the 2022 season, the English Open English Sporting. The ground have made some great investments over the last few years, incorporating more of the spectacular space that is available to them, and its great to see the ground in full showcase mode”

Over 250 shooters took to the course with Cheryl Hall setting the early lead in the morning with a fantastic 113ex120, closely followed by Sam Green on 112ex120. In the Juniors category, Darcy McBride put in a strong 107ex120 with Robert Gray leading the Veterans on 103ex120 and Seth Peters in Colts finishing with a great 98ex120. Later in the day, Martin Cyffin-Jones matched Cheryl's score with another 113ex120.

Just back from his success in San Antonio, Texas with his World Sporting Crown, George Digweed MBE took to the course at 13.57pm and he led the scoreboard at the end of day one with a huge score of 116ex120. He commented “it was very enjoyable, it's a great course, the ground looks a million dollars and we've shot some new stands, some different stands and really enjoyed it!”
