Day Three Report:

There was an array of top shots out on the English Sporting course on Friday at West Midlands Shooting Ground for the third day of the British Open.

Phil Gray and Alex Cobb posted the highest score of the day, both with 112, whilst Scott Barnett and David Hughes Jnr followed on 110.

A class shooter Chris Stott from Carlisle was a first-time visitor to West Midlands Shooting Ground and was full of praise for the venue, “I really enjoyed the course, the targets were probably the best I’ve seen this year and I’m really impressed with the ground.”

Discussing his round Chris said, “I shot 101 out of 120. I left a few silly ones there, but I’ve been a bit low on confidence lately, so I’m happy with that.”

Chris narrowly missed out on making the top five scores in A class, though he said he looks forward to returning to West Midlands in the future.

15 year-old Henry Bevan shot a stunning 105 to top score in A class to ensure his return on Sunday. A brilliant score from the young man and certainly one to watch in the Colts.

When looking back over the first three days of the competition CPSA Chief Executive Nick Fellows commented, “It’s a pleasure to be here and the feedback we’ve had from the competitors has been fantastic, they’ve loved both the Sporting and Sportrap courses. People have been giving great compliments on the course and how the targets have shot and the fact there haven’t been any hold ups, which is brilliant to hear.”

He added, “We’re really grateful to our sponsors: Zoli, Gamebore and Promatic and CCI for supplying the traps and clays as well.”

In the Sportrap Andrew Calvert held a short-lived lead on Friday afternoon. Having shot the course at midday he surged to the top of the leaderboard on 93 ex 100. However, Richard Faulds followed Andrew an hour later and managed to go one better with an impressive 94.

With the Sportrap finishing tomorrow evening, the remaining shooters have a high standard to reach if they are to deny Richard the title.

The Ladies competition is looking equally as competitive. Last year’s runner-up Hannah Gibson shot an 86 to tie with Becky McKenzie for the lead. If the standings remain the same, the two face a shoot off tomorrow evening to determine the Category winner.

If you are reading this, please be aware that shoot offs and presentations for the Sportrap take place tomorrow evening at approximately 5pm.
