Volunteer of the Year
(sponsored by CPSA)

Nominees

Bob Smith Janet Stennett

I retired in 2007 after serving as a Scientific Adviser to the London Fire Brigade for 17 years and finishing my career teaching Fire Investigation to Fire, Police and Scenes of Crime Officers for 7 years.

I first shot clays in 2006. In 2015 I started the Diss Area Sporting Clay Shooters Facebook page to provide a weekly calendar of local events.

The membership has now grown to over 1,000. As the group expanded the focus embraced shoots over a larger area of East Anglia and beyond. Championship and National events are also covered. There is comprehensive weekly results coverage and marketplace and discussion opportunities.

In 2018 I set up the DASCS registered trophy shoot in conjunction with Highwaymans Shooting Ground. The aim was to raise the group profile and generate funds for local charities. The events have attracted good attendances and the trophy currently bears the names of Mark Goddard, Chris Orrin and Sam Green. The generosity of sponsors, donors and raffle participants has resulted in the four annual events raising a total over of £11,700 including £9,603 for St Nicholas Hospice Care in Bury St Edmunds.

I discovered long ago what a fantastic sport we have so I have been only too keen to use my energies and enthusiasm to encourage others to appreciate the sport as I do.  I joined the Lincolnshire committee in 2003 and from the outset thought that the work of the committee could be more than just setting championship fixtures.  So in addition there are now things like the annual handbook produced for members, organising teams for both regional and national intercounty shoots, maintaining the website, reporting on personal successes of our county champions and team successes, fund raising through raffles to provide county skeet vests to team members, sourcing and selling county merchandise and to this end I can often be found at shoots with a car boot full of team clothing and a camera to capture the achievements of the day.

The pandemic, tough as it has been, has not diminished these activities one iota.  We have just kept going, continuing to provide the framework which this year has enabled our combined teams to win the East Midlands Directors Trophy and in so doing achieved the highest total points in the history of the competition.  My task next year will be to motivate the teams to do it again!!

I am also a proactive Chairman of the East Midlands regional committee.   Always pleased to assist members in bringing their talents and projects to the attention of the regional committee and management board which this year resulted in the adoption of an intercounties sportrap competition and the continuation of regional support for the intercounties Helice introduced last year.

Any committee needs a person who is prepared to put in the effort to drive things forward and I hope my contribution to the sport achieves that.
